Accessibility

The Nation is for everyone, and the platform has to be too. This page says plainly what we build to, what we check, what we know is not there yet, and how to reach us when something gets in your way.
What we build to
We design and build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. In practice that means:
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a skip link to the main content.
- Every image, icon button, and control has a text name that screen readers announce.
- Text meets the AA contrast ratio in every hue — Onyx, Espresso, Cocoa, Caramel, and Sand — so the look you pick never costs you readability.
- Links inside text are underlined, not just coloured.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, animations are turned off.
- Layouts reflow to phones, foldables, tablets, and desktops without sideways scrolling, and at up to 200% zoom.
How we check
An automated accessibility audit (axe-core, WCAG 2.1 A and AA) runs on every public page, at desktop and phone widths, every time the site is built. A build with a violation does not ship. Colour contrast is checked separately in all five hues.
Automated tools catch only part of what matters, so we also walk the core flows — signing up, the feed, messaging, logging a workout — by keyboard and with a screen reader when they change.
What we know is not there yet
- Embedded players from music and video services (Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud) are theirs, not ours; their accessibility is what those services provide. Every card also offers an “Open in” link to the service's own app.
- Live captions on MFN TV broadcasts depend on the YouTube stream.
- The site has not yet been audited by an independent accessibility specialist. We will say so here when it has.
Tell us
If anything on MFN is hard to use with your setup — a screen reader, a switch, voice control, magnification, anything — email hello@melanin.fitness and say what you were trying to do and what happened. A real person reads it, and fixing what you report goes to the front of the line.
